After winning comprehensively against NNK two weeks ago, the U20’s are willing to keep this winning momentum going. Leading up to the game against newly promoted Uni – Mil, the U20’s were focused and determined to get another victory, but we knew Uni – Mil was going to be a tough encounter. Match day conditions were perfect which resulted in some exiting rugby being played. The U20’s didn’t take long before they crossed the Uni – mil try line through some elusive running from scrumhalf Esjohhne Goliath. The game was very open and both sides showed some skill and purpose. The U20’s dominated the set pieces which gave the backline clean ball to attack. The U20’s camped in the Uni – Mil’s half for most of the first half. After Uni – Mil conceded far too many penalties, Lock Wonga Koti dotted the ball down after a quick tap and go for the U20’s second try.
HALFTIME SCORE: 15 – 3
After the half time huddle, the U20’s were given strict instructions to play the game plan. The U20’s started to slow the game down and stick to their structure. The U20’s center pairing of Ettiene Spies and Liam Stevenson were firing on all cylinders, they controlled the center of the field well and got over the advantage line almost every time the pair received the ball. It was at that stage of the match to bring on the substitutes, and it didn’t take long for replacement 8th man Enrico Luit to score the U20’s third try. The U20’s started to loose their focus which resulted in Uni – Mil to score in the corner for their first try. With minutes to go, the U20’s were pushing really hard for their fourth try but time wasn’t on our side. The game ended in 22 – 10 to Hammies.
Man of the match was fullback Darren Solomon.
