Last season Hammies 3rds put 90 odd points past Tygerberg. This year it was a different story.
In what quickly became a difficult day, Hammies were disrupted before kick off with winger Dean Wolmarans pulling up with a hamstring injury. Poor Dean couldn’t take part at all, so really bad luck for him. Wish you a speedy recovery.
To our surprise, the game was moved from the 1st team field to make way for the seemingly “promoted” U 20 fixture.
So to the B field and from the kick off, Tygerberg dominated territory with Hammies conceding a huge amount of penalties. This gave lock Mike Green on his 1st game back in action plenty of tackling opportunities and he got stuck in straight away with plenty of vigour.
Despite a slow start, Hammies did score against the run of play to take a 7 nil lead with No 8 Lazz Chisaya getting the 1st try in a special day for our Lazz. Receiving his much deserved Hammies blazer on the touch line after, Lazz completed his day with 2 more tries and a hatrick on the day. His first try was the pick as he had to run it in from quite some distance, showing Tygerberg a clean pair of heels in the process.
Bobby Louw made a solid 1st start at 12 and Dylan Fairbridge scored another terrific long range effort. Wybrand de Kok did a fine job as a stand in scrum half and shows his versatility each time he has played this season. We hope they can all bring this form into the big games to come.
Up front Hammies had a poor day at the office. Line outs didn’t function as well as we would have hoped and in fact Tygerberg mauled Hammies with some effect on a few occasions. There were also a few missed tackles and then blemishes at scrum time with 2 tight heads somehow making their way to Tygerberg’s scrum.
Tyerberg must be commended on a much improved team from last year and playing to the final whistle. They scored more points in the last 10 minutes of the game. Belhar doing the same last weekend. Got to play till the final whistle boys!!
Hammies took control of proceedings about mid way through the 2nd half when 5 minutes of great individual play and one fine team try. The team try by way of a “coast to coast”, changed the game in our favour. Well executed boys!!
Hammies will be happy with the bonus point but lots of hard work this week in preparation for the big game at False Bay on Saturday.
