Juniors match report against Kirstenhof Primary

Saturday saw round 2 of the WP Primary Schools league for 2017 and we took on Kirstenhof Primary.

The U9B got Hammies off to great start winning 35-15, with wing Aku Makaya the star player.

The U9A’s faced a tough challenge against a very well- organised Kirstenhof outfit and in the first half were made to sweat. Once again turn over ball cost the 9A’s who trailed 1-0 for most of the first half. Hammies improved at the breakdown as the match wore on, profiting from quick ball we scored 5 tries in reply. Final score 25-5

The U10’s showed great improvement to run out winners by 19-5. The teams were evenly matched and played a fairly expansive game of rugby, with good skills on show. Eventually the home side won the day and all credit to Kirstenhof who characteristically were tough to break down.

The U11A match was arguably the match of the day with Hammies running out winners by 35-21, but only after a spirited comeback by the boys in blue. An epic offload by Kian Krapf saw winger Josh Pullen sprint down the touch line for the try of the day. Two very evenly matched teams put on a great spectacle which saw Hammies pull away after half time and Kirstenhof finish much the stronger of the two sides. Earlier the U11B’s ran out winner by 21-5.

Both the U12’s and 13’s were outplayed by their counterparts on the day. Kirstenhof had far greater cohesion and boys who had played rugby for many years while many of our players have only started playing rugby this year. This was a great learning curve for our boys and we have no doubt that they will improve as the season progresses.

Our opponents were as always, very well prepared and the matches played in great spirit. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable day of junior rugby.
