Hammies – “Seccies” started their 2015 WP Super “A” rugby season with a comeback from the dead to clinch a great away win at Stellenbosch against Vic’s “Markotters” on Saturday 18 April 2015.
An early penalty from Mr. “Reliable”, Lohan Lubbe gave Hammies an early 3 – 0 lead, but this lead soon evaporated as Vic’s turned on the heat in a 20 minute spell that saw them score 3 unanswered tries of which two were converted to take a commanding 19 – 3 lead. At this stage Hammies – “Seccies” looked very lethargic in the heat of Stellenbosch!
Just before half-time, Hammies started their rise with a nice blind side try by Ryno Rust after several attacking phases and this try was also converted by Lohan Lubbe.
At halftime, the Coaches words of inspiration worked as Hammies started playing for one another and as a team. They started believing in themselves in the second half. Lead by Skipper , Paddy Holman, Hammies started taking control of the match and within 10 minutes of the second half, a well worked try by Braam Gerber that was not converted left Hammies trailing 19 -15.
A few substitutions by the Coaches and some fresh legs on the field created the opportunity for Hammies to start pressurising Vic’s into making mistakes and with 7 minutes left, Justin Jinka intercepted the ball from a Vic’s blind side move and scored what was the winning try. Lohan Lubbe added the conversion.
With time running out, Hammies – “Seccies” held on for a dramatic 22 – 19 win showing true grit and determination, pulling off a terrific comeback of note and must be applauded for fantastic attitude! Let’s keep on going – HAMMIES!
