Hamilton power to victory in the 140th Derby

Match day three in the Hamilton SP-RFC preseason preparations continued with a powerful victory against Villager in the 140th Derby Day match and in doing so retained the “Friendship” trophy.

Villager RFC did their level best to retain possession from numerous pick and ruck movements throughout the game by starving possession from the much fancied Hamilton outfit. Unfortunately they were constantly outplayed and struggled to cross the advantage line. With this tactic, they often lost possession and were punished by the terrific running game Hamilton’s produced in match. Hamilton SP RFC 1st team ran out convincing winners by 73 – 14 in this home derby fixture.

Lead by enthusiastic Captain – Patrick O’Brien, Hammies were very good throughout and ran in 10 tries and one penalty try. Flyhalf – Siya Alam contributed 26 points on his own to the match with 2 tries and 8 conversions. Other try scorers were wingers – Valentino Wellman (2), Tshepo Manaka (1), Dylan Fairbridge (1), Juwell Samuels (1), Christo van der Merwe (1), Hooker – Robbie Trueman (1),  and substitute Fullback – Wynand McCloughlan (1).

No fewer than 23 of the Hamilton 1st team squad consisting of 25 players made their Derby Day debuts. Only veterans Neil Cleghorn and Johnny Raphial have previously represented Hamilton 1st team in a Derby game. They both had the honour to present all debutants with their match day jerseys at a small function prior to the game.

Hard working Lock, Justin Moberly deservedly got Man of the Match for a fantastic performance. He was well supported by his terrific pack that paved the way of victory. Our backs were a constant thorn in the Villager’s defence with strong running by our midfield that saw no less than six tries scored by our outside backs.

Coaches – Niekkie Viljoen and Koos Eksteen will want to sustain their current form and finish the preseason friendlies on a high with an away win at Brackenfell RFC on Saturday, 25 March 2017.
