Getting to know our Support Staff: Tyrrell Smith

NAME:
Tyrrell Smith
POSITION:
1st team physio
NICKNAME:
Ty, T-dog, T-bone, T-money. Basically anything with a β€œT”
WHEN DID YOU JOIN HAMMIES?
2017
PHYSIO BACKGROUND:
Went straight into private practice in Gqeberha after comm serve. Came back to Cape Town in 2016. My physio background ranges from out-patient to hospital to sports.
BEST ADVICE TO PLAYERS TO AVOID INJURIES:
Pre-habilitation in the off season.
WHY IS A SLOW START SO CRUCIAL AFTER HAVING AN EXTENDED BREAK FROM PLAYING ACTIVE RUGBY?
It’s simple, too much too soon leads to injuries.
FAVOURITE HAMMIES MOMENT:
My first Hammies game as a physio in 2017. We played against False Bay. I was not expecting such a big crowd. 😳 and then the Durban Tour in 2018.
FAVOURITE HAMMIES LEGEND/PERSONALITY AND WHY:
Niekkie Viljoen, for giving me a chance back in 2017, Patrick Holman – the man exudes gees and he knows just how to instil that gees in you and Justin β€œMobes” Moberly. What a guy!
BEST ADVICE FOR UPCOMING PLAYERS:
If you don’t come to the medic room I can’t pull you from a game haha.
WHAT MOVIE CHARACTER DESCRIBES YOU BEST, AND WHY?
Basically, any bald actor. Our face actually ends at the back of our head, hence when we wash our face we wash all the way to the back.πŸ˜€
SOMETHING YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME:
I have a flannel shirt collection.
LIKES:
Nothing like a Guinness Beer in the heart of winter, Marvel movies and rock pools.
DISLIKES
Traffic, litchi’s (If hell was a fruit) and bigotry.
FUNNIEST MOMENT ON THE FIELD:
An opposition player took a knee to the groin. He called me over for some ice. I accidently dropped the bag of ice on his groin. It was something out a Mr. Bean movie πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€
FAVOURITE RUGBY PLAYER OF ALL TIME:
Brian O’Driscoll.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HAMMIES?
The gees, the banter, the camaraderie.
GOALS FOR 2021:
Hopefully take a holiday. I haven’t been on leave since 2019.
