Getting to know our Committee: Adrian Kay

NAME: Adrian Kay
POSITION: Junior Rugby Coordinator
WHEN DID YOU JOIN HAMMIES? 2016
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS JUNIOR RUGBY COORDINATOR:
I organize the rugby program for the juniors from U7 to U13. This includes fixtures, coaching and admin. Generally, we provide a good platform for the boys to showcase their talents.
RUGBY HONOURS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
All my grey hairs are my silver medals!
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR YOUR COACHING CAREER?
Retiring after 2021
FAVOURITE HAMMIES MOMENT:
Seeing so many of the boys coming to the club knowing very little about rugby and
achieving great things.
WORST HAMMIES MOMENT:
None, there have been low points, but all worth it to further the kids’ rugby experience.
FUNNIEST HAMMIES MOMENT:
I was trying to water the field and didn’t attach the pipe properly. When I turned the water on, I got completely soaked. I battled for five minutes trying to attach it. I was drenched and then I still had to coach afterwards.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HAMMIES?
Too many things! The Marsh Shirtliff lounge – I can get lost looking at all the photos and history. Also the kids and parents of the juniors.
FAVOURITE HAMMIES LEGEND/PERSONALITY AND WHY:
Marsh Shirtliff – a wonderful human being, and Campbell McCraw who, from a rugby point of view, was a great mentor, especially on forward play.
WHAT MOVIE CHARACTER DESCRIBES YOU BEST, AND WHY?
Severus Snape – Intense
LIKES: People who are passionate about the game and go the extra mile
DISLIKES: Selfishness
FAVOURITE RUGBY PLAYER OF ALL TIME: Gio Aplon
GOALS FOR 2021:
A 3 – 0 whitewash for the Boks! Hammies to win the super league, and for the juniors to go from strength to strength and maybe one or two of our boys will make WP colours this year.
