Going into the mid season break Hammies could be well pleased with their efforts in the 1st half. A great away win at Durbanville the high point and a memorable forward pack effort on that day. The week before was a definite low at False Bay where chances went begging and some strange time keeping went against us.
Mid season we were a team ready to make a charge for the cup.
During the break saw a tour to Stellenbosch which allowed the group some good bonding time outside of social media.
Preparations resumed mid season and the run up to the Vics game proved challenging. Our season hinged on that result and sadly Hammies 3rds were not ready for a very fit and well drilled defensive outfit in Vics. Lessons learned from that I hope for future title seeking aspirations. A season highlight did emerge from that match. Maties capturing and sharing footage of a really brilliant team try scored by Siya ,was a beeeeaaaauty.
As combinations we saw some real improvement as the season wore on. A special mention for Siya who was one of our most improved and valuable players this season.
As well as the backs played, this season was all about the scrum and this 3rd XV were really dominant. Blessed with most intelligent props stocks in the galaxy, most clubs would dream of, with Erf, Denver, Pikker, Vleis, Bantu, Schalk, Brandon and Frankie all doing regular duty. Daniel Pikker must be commended for the way he lead the team from the front and his scumming all season gave us a real foundation from which to attack and relieve pressure. Pikker also managed to get fit by the UCT game which was also pleasing to see.
The line outs had their moments , on their day Mike Green, Leo, Frenchie, Derek, Matt and Luxi served our line well all season. Mike Green adding some real experience to pack and his advice on women to our young pups and some tough love body mass mentoring have been his stand outs.
Hookers all stood out this season at times with Martin makin the early running before a nasty knee injury cut his season short. Faried impressed everyone when he played and Brett ending the year in his best position and showing a great attitude despite having to bench more than he should of. Frankie also stood in with some solid performance and a memorable day out against the students.
The back row was more settled with Emil Lazz and Jacob forming a good understanding in broken play. Occasionally beaten on the ground to turnover we were a much better back row with ball in hand and a great defensive combo.
After Tristain did an early season runner, Chad took over at 9 and started just about every game. I dont remember Chad missing a practise either and his performances showed that his hard work payed off. Chads effort was very special and his nomination for player of the season is well deserved.
At flyhalf Ridge had a really outstanding 1st half of season and was in some serious try scoring form and throwing some great passes to team mates to score.
Wybrand also putting in some great performances for the team and that booming boot and excellent restarts a real valueble contribution from him in a number of positions.
Our centres did great service all year. Dan Mack running the show really well from 13 and Robbie, Bobby and Jaco sharing the 12 jersey. We had some strong combinations in the centres and lots of great tries were deservedly scored by these guys.
Outwide Scotty made a great comeback with a man of match performance against SK. Dean pulled a hammy in a warm up but also played very well when he was able to play.
Dylan Fairbridge earned a much deserved call up for the 2nds after consistent form for the 3rds. He is maturing as a player and we watch his career with interest.
A narrow but gutsy loss at Maties and a bonus point home win at UCT were the 2 best performances to finish the season in a credible 4th place.
Next year Hammies thirds will need to look closely at the past 2 seasons and how we can improve in those big games to go top.
The coaching staff of Gavin Dave and Myself have really enjoyed ourselves and honoured to be part of this group of players. Wishing you all a good off season where we hope you dont get too fat and turn up ready to go one or two better in 2017.
Best wishes
BERRY {Manager 3rd XV}
