In a very one sided contest, the Hammies 3rd team kept their unbeaten league run going with a resounding 87 – 0 victory at Green Point on Saturday.
The visitors were disorganised and paid heavily as Hammies ran riot from the opening whistle.
The game kicked off late and was blown short due to the heavy score line. Sir Lowrians only managed to field 13 players at the kick off. A shambolic display which left spectators, players and officials disappointed at the one lopsidedness of the contest.
Hammies hardly broke a sweat, scoring without too much trouble at each visit to the opponents half. Fortunately none of the players appeared to get injured which is quite often the case in such a one sided contest.
Credit must go to Sir Lowrians pack. They scrummed throughout and did not resort to uncontested scrums despite being under a lot of pressure throughout.
If one has be critical of Hammies, one aspect of their game this season that needs attention is the aerial game. Line out and kick offs were quite poorly executed for a 2nd week in a row. Sir Lowrians best chances came from chip kicks, line outs and kick offs. Stronger teams will punish Hammies in these areas if they don’t sort it out.
On the positive, Centre Robbie Alben and wing PJ Rencs again caught the eye with some strong running and support play. In the forwards, Flank Jacob Modipa and prop Bantu Mene also looked good with ball in hand, proving far to much for the Sir Lowrians desperate defence.
The moment of the match was the big Luxembourger Lock forward Stephan Schaap scoring what he thought was a terrific try only to be denied by a small technicality requiring the touch down to be over the try line and not the 22. Better luck next time Stephan!
