The U20s couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2017 rugby season with a dominant performance over False Bay resulting in a 42 – 12 win.
The U20s started the game with some brilliant play resulting in Hammies camping in False Bay’s half for most of the first half. It didn’t take long before the defense of False Bay to fail and scrumhalf Bendre Jonck sniped to cross the whitewash for the U20’s first try of the season.
The game was very physical but our boys were up for a fight. There were many big hits and collisions which were well orchestrated by the loose trio of Uwe Giessler, Dominic van der Walt and Wonga Koti.
Captain courageous Frield Weich scored an amazing individual try by beating several defenders and scoring under the poles.
Half Time: Hammies lead 14 – 5.
The U20s started to dominate possession in the second half and started to play some exciting running rugby. Winger Keagan Boswell showed off his jet shoes by rounding his defender to collect the ball from a grubber kick and score for Hamilton’s.
Centre pairing , Malan Barnard and Etienne Spies were clinical on defense and attack and the chemistry between them is non like any other. After many phases and wonderful offloads in the tackle, Etienne Spies managed to beat the last defender to score that all important bonus point fourth try.
We looked to have ran out of steam in the second half which resulted in False Bay scoring their second try from an unforced error. Fly half Matthew de Villiers showed us what a sharp shooter he is by kicking 5/5 conversions, controlling the game like a general and kept his backline firing on all cylinders.
With a few minutes remaining in the game and Hamilton’s reduced to 14 men, changes were needed. We showed off our experience and determination to keep fighting all the way to the final whistle. With some fresh legs on the field it didn’t take long for substitute flanker Enrico Luit to make an impact and score. The game was very open in the dying minutes and it was truly a spectacle to watch. Many passes, offloads and quick play saw Daniel Schiedagger score the final try.
Final score was 42 – 12
Man of the match was awarded to captain Frield Weich.
