The Hammies juniors have been treated to a busy itinerary since the beginning of May. This included a Friday afternoon fixture away at Kirstenhof Primary and our U11’s and 13’s participating in the Tableview 10’s.
Kirstenhof
A Mixed U10/11 team did battle with Kirstenhof Primary on 13 May, and it proved to be a lucky Friday the 13th for this mixed bag of players who emphatically defeated Kirstenhof U11 by 57 – 0, which included 9 tries and six conversions from the boot of makeshift flyhalf Samuel Collins. Jake Brouze, and Endi produced stellar performances.
The U9’s (A Mix of U8/9) easily won by 30-0, with Sam Alexander picking up two valuable tries, while Luke Burger impressed yet again. The U12’s ran in 6 tries to 1 in a thrilling encounter, filled with sublime handling. They prevailed by 34-5.
A great evening hosted by Kirstenhof Primary and much thanks to them for having us. Expect much more in the return fixture, Kirstenhof primary are a school with a proud rugby tradition.
Tableview 10’s
A great days rugby and a brilliant day if you like drinking Coffee and Hot Chocolate. Before we go any further a huge thank you to all the parents that made the trip and kept the boys in gourmet dining. The rugby itself was of a high quality. The only wild passes thrown all day were by our teams. That aside we played with great continuity and a fair amount of width.
Our U11’s won 4/5 at the Tableview festival, while the U13’s claimed 3 wins and a draw. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we are pleased to announce that Hammies have been invited for the 2017 edition of the Tableview 10’s. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event and thank you to all the parents for attending and also to those who kept all of our boys fed and filled with hot chocolate and coffee for the entire day!
Primrose
On Saturday 21st May, we did the most unusual thing of playing Primrose away from home at Rangers RFC. Rangers also hosted Primrose the night before. It was a unique day indeed, in which the U8’s won by 9-8, the 9B’s by 4-1 and the 9A’s by 6-1.
The 10b’s prevailed in a tough encounter against what could only have been the Primrose U10A (given the relative ease with which the 10A’s beat what was supposed to be Primrose 10A) . The scoreline of 7-5 does not tell the tale of frustration that persists in junior rugby due to poor officiating and at times blatant bias. Mervyn Abrahams picked up a loose ball and raced in for a try in the corner and Sam Collins nailed his conversion attempt from the touchline to give Hammies an unlikely victory against impossible odds.
Little was to change in the 10A fixture other than our opponents being considerably weaker than the team which ran on to face our 10B’s. The 10A’s quickly notched up two tries and were never really troubled by anyone in this match other than from player no.16 it ended: 19-0. The U10’s march on, unbeaten but not without the heroics of Samuel Collins who’s contribution in the 10b fixture, 10 seconds after he was brought on to save the day, will live long in the memory.
Another clinical performance from the U11’s saw them winning by 24-0 (a familiar scoreline on the day). Another makeshift team missing some key players managed to piece together a comfortable win against Primrose. Again Excellent scrummaging and aggressive play around the rucks enabled us to maintain possession for long periods of time. A fair amount of white line fever probably prevented the score line from really growing. Thanks again to the side-line support.Won 24 – 0
The U12’s easily saw off Primrose by 26 – 0, at times dazzling skills had the crowd in awe. The U13’s came unstuck 10-17 in a tough encounter.
