A scintillating 1st half performance was what the Hamilton faithful were on hand to witness as we demolished a competitive UWC fresh from their Varsity Shield Campaign.
Last years narrow victory away was put to bed as we started with a sweeping movement off the kick off receipt. The ball was spread from touchline to touchline through multiple phases before Jano van Zyl scored the first of his four first half tries.
Our pack ensured that we secured quality first phase possession something we had struggled with in our previous match , this enabled us to play a high tempo brand of rugby stretching UWC , creating opportunities for our attacking backs.
Michael Teichman and Sebastian Ferreira both still u21 excelled in the loose, smashing rucks and forcing turnovers. This allowed Gareth Rowe and Jody Burch to link with the backs creating opportunities out wide with Burch crossing for a brace in the process.
With the score at 50-7 former Springbok Coach Pieter De Villers UWC team’s fate hand been sealed.
We rung the changes in the second half which affected our continuity allowing them to score twice before we kicked into gear scoring 13 tries in total with the final score being 79-21.
It was pleasing to see how our younger players have started to gel with our stalwarts as left wing Iewan Bartels showed some blistering pace as he ran in 3 second half tries after we launched attack from deep in our own half. 19 year old Jacques Oostuisen added to the tally as this tear away flanker stepped inside to beat the cross covering defence.
Other stand out players on the day were Greg Van Jaarsveldt , Debutant Tight Head Boeta Loubser and Jason Marcus.
We now shift our focus on to long time rivals Villager as we welcome them back to Stephan Road on Friday night in a real Southern Suburb Derby.
