The WP Primary School league is upon us and on Friday evening our mini rugby players took on Wynberg Boys Junior School, while Saturday morning saw our U10-13 play PRIMROSE RFC.
The much awaited fixture vs WBJS took place on Friday evening amid grey and dark skies, but the rugby on show certainly lit up the occasion. A strong Wynberg Boys mini rugby outfit travelled to Hammies and in the first match their U9Bs pace and power proved too much for Hammies under 9B (many of whom had never played rugby until Friday). Wynberg ran out winners by 35-5.
The U9A Match was the highlight of the evening and our boys played out of their skins in the first half leading 10-0 at Half time. Wynberg Boys U9A mounted a strong come back in the second half feeding off our mistakes as our players tired of the great intensity. Flyhalf Luca Simone scored a try at the death to snatch a 15-all draw for Hammies U9A. A remarkable result against a top rugby school.
Saturday saw the U10’s first match on the big field vs Primrose. Hammies had the better of the First Half but Primrose proved to be more clinical on the day running out 17-7 winners. Hammies frequent handling errors were a set back to them on the day.
The U11’s picked up where they left off last year and decisively beat Primrose in both U11 matches. The U11B’s won 19-7 and the A team won 41-10.
The U12’s looked undercooked struggled against a strong Primrose outfit, while numerous errors cost the U13’s dearly against Primrose U13A going down 24-10. Both teams struggled for cohesion
